What is Thermoforming?
Thermoforming is a manufacturing process where a plastic sheet is heated to a pliable forming temperature, formed to a specific shape in a mold, and trimmed to create a usable product. The sheet, or “film” when referring to thinner gauges and certain material types, is heated in an oven to a high-enough temperature that it can be stretched into or onto a mold and cooled to a finished shape.
Difference between 2D and 3D thermoforming
3D Thermoforming is when we bend the material in three directions at once. 3D thermoforming is more complicated then 2D thermoforming. 2D Thermoforming is when we shape the flat sheet in one direction.
To what temperature we heat solid surface materials?
Our thermoforming ovens are heated to 180 degrees centigrade. Once the material reaches the temperature of 180 degrees, it becomes softened and bendy like rubber. We only have a several minutes gap to create the required shape before the material becomes hard again. On average it takes solid surface material about an hour to cool down and retain the desired shape.
